Fields in a margin calculation are not equally dangerous. Volume and price multiply the result, so a decimal point one place out moves it by a factor of ten; leverage divides it, so the same slip there moves it by ten in the opposite direction; the instrument is not typed at all, yet changing it moves the contract size and the answer currency together. The fastest test of a result is proportion — a requirement that is the same order of magnitude as the position value means leverage was read wrongly, and leverage is the field to open first.

The values the form supplies instead of asking

The order the fields are worth checking in

Leverage comes first, and not because it is the most often mistyped. It comes first because a wrong value there looks completely ordinary on screen — 1:50 and 1:500 are both plausible strings, and neither draws the eye — while the answer between them differs by a factor of ten. Nothing about the form flags it.

Volume comes second. A slip here is just as large in effect, but the field is short and the digits are few, so it is easier to re-read than to reason about. Price comes third: it multiplies like volume, and a misplaced point is visible once the number is compared with the quote actually being traded.

The instrument comes last in checking order and first in difficulty, because it is the only one of the four where nothing was typed at all.

Two checks that need no arithmetic

The first is proportion. A margin requirement is meant to be a slice of the position value, and a small one. If the two numbers are within sight of each other, the calculation was done at something close to 1:1 and the leverage field is the reason. This check works without knowing either figure in advance, which is what makes it useful on an unfamiliar screen.

The second is the currency the answer arrives in. It follows the contract behind the symbol, not the field that was last touched, so an answer in an unexpected currency means an unexpected symbol is selected — even when every number on the form looks like the one that was intended.

Neither check confirms that a result is right. Both are quick enough to run every time, and both catch the errors that are large enough to matter.

Why a wrong instrument is the hardest slip to see

A mistyped digit leaves evidence: the digit is still there to be re-read. A wrongly selected symbol leaves none. Every field the reader filled in is exactly as intended, the form is complete, and the answer is a perfectly reasonable number — for a different contract.

It is also the only slip that moves two independent things at once. The contract size changes what one lot stands for, and the denomination changes what the answer is counted in. Two changes with one action, and neither of them announces itself.

The practical defence is to read the symbol out loud before reading the result, and to be suspicious whenever an answer is plausible but unfamiliar. A number that is merely surprising usually means a typed field; a number that is reasonable but wrong usually means the wrong line was picked.

Where a slip stays small

Not every field deserves the same attention, and treating them alike wastes the attention that the dangerous ones need. Trailing digits of a price are the clearest example: moving the fourth or fifth decimal changes the requirement by a fraction of a percent, which is far below the difference between one plan and another.

Rounding a volume from 0.13 to 0.15 belongs to the same class — the answer moves, but it moves in proportion and in a direction the reader intended. So does taking a price a few points away from the live quote in order to plan ahead, since the point of the exercise is the order of magnitude rather than the last cent.

The distinction worth carrying away is between fields that change a result and fields that change its size class. Only the second kind turns a plan into a different plan.

Ten seconds on a result before it is used

  1. Compare the requirement with the position value: it should be visibly smaller, not comparable.
  2. Read the leverage field before anything else if the two are comparable.
  3. Check the currency of the answer against the symbol that is selected.
  4. Re-read the volume digit by digit — it is the shortest field and the one where a point moves furthest.
  5. Change one field deliberately and confirm the answer reacts; a result that does not move was never recalculated.

None of these steps repeats the arithmetic; they test whether the arithmetic was done on the intended inputs.
